The open-source YouTube client for Android we’ve covered before is back with a pretty packed update. Flow 1.5.0 brings several improvements to both audio and video, along with plenty of work on the internals.
Equalizer and more reliable playback
The most noticeable addition is a built-in equalizer with customizable presets for different music genres, plus controls for playback speed, pitch, and bass boost. Great news for anyone who uses Flow primarily for music. There’s also a significant technical change: playback now relies on InnerTube APIs instead of NewPipe’s libraries, a move the developers say should improve reliability going forward.
Auto brightness via gestures and landscape mode also make an appearance, along with fixes to background playback and queue management.
FlowNeuro Engine V6
The other major update is FlowNeuro, the on-device recommendation engine that works entirely locally with no tracking. Version 6 rewrites a good chunk of the system, introducing recommendations from the very first launch, better content diversity in suggested videos, and more reliable preference saving.
The interface has been cleaned up overall, with redesigned screens for music and appearance settings. Flow requires Android 5.0 or higher and can be downloaded directly from GitHub.
